Facts about Designing Websites for Clients

By June SpringJune Spring
Businessman's place of work with laptop on wood table

As a website designer, working with a client is much different than designing a site for yourself. There are pros and cons, but here are five things that we’ve found to be true:

Each Client Is Unique.

Some clients know what they want and expects you to create precisely that manner while others have no clue what they want and they’ll leave most of the decisions up to you. Some clients will be a pleasure to work with, others will make you want to pursue a different career. Each client is not the same and will present new challenges and opportunities.

Communication is Vital.

Effective communication will keep the project moving in the right direction and it will prevent unnecessary work to fix mistakes that could have been avoided. Understanding what the client wants and expectation are, can be difficult in some situations. For every client you are dealing with, communication is very important. It also involves asking the right questions to get everyone on the same page.

Sometimes Clients don’t know what’s best.

Some clients will be very knowledgeable about design while others simply won’t. From time-to-time you’ll get clients that want something specific, even if you advise them against it. Those clients that aren’t knowledgeable will usually trust your opinion, but this won’t apply at all times.

The most Valuable opinion is the Client’s.

Satisfying the client is important, even if you’re using a design element that you believe is a mistake. The best you can do is to provide your opinion and back it up. If they still want it their way, then you have to work with that. At the end of the day, the client is paying for the website design that you created for them.

Turn Clients into Referrals.

Referrals are usually the best customers because they trust the judgment of their friend that told them about you. This really helps you save time in seeking out new business and save advertising expenses. Clients who are truly pleased with the service that they have received will be willing to tell others about you.

Things to ponder.

Each task will give opportunities for learning and for improving your skills. If you can look at each situation as a learning experience that will make you a better website designer, you’ll develop new skills quickly.
